Since there is a good chance that you may have a cell phone, below are some tips that may help you save money on your monthly bill and save for your debt settlement.
Use The Same Plan As Your Friends And Family
Some carriers allow friends and family members to talk for free if they subscribe to the same service. There may also be a discount if you form family plans. So, it is usually wise if everyone in the household has the same cell phone carrier.
Consider A Prepaid Phone Service
If you use your cell phone sparingly, you may consider a prepaid or pay-as-you-go plan, which usually allows customers to buy minutes as they need them and do not involve lengthy contracts. Search for pay as you go plans by visiting www.myrateplan.com.
Be Wary Of Cosigning For A Cell Phone
Cosigning for a cell phone for someone that may not qualify for one can result in a costly experience. It is wise to think about what can happen before you make that commitment.

Good suggestions, and it's often possible to improve your rates by working with your carrier. I would add, however, that just because you get a better rate doesn't necessarily mean you're suddenly getting the best rate possible. The carriers are in this to make money, not to save you cash in a tough economy. Not to blatantly plug, but I would suggest to everyone reading that after you negotiate with your carrier, check out the online cell bill reduction company that I work for, Validas, which saves people an average of 28 percent off their cells bills through the website http://www.fixmycellbill.com . Our modifications to your plan are uniquely structured around your individual usage patterns; Validas works for you rather than for the cell companies. Check out Validas on Good Morning America at http://www.abcnews.go.com/GMA/MakeMoney/story?id=7640149&page=1.
I bet you'll see that your wireless provider may improve your rates but will not maximize your savings.

I like the idea of going prepaid. My contract expires at the end of the month and I'm NOT signing up for a two-year cell-slavery again.
I'm currently looking at a great plan from Tracfone called StraightTalk which is equivalent to my current plan but $15 cheaper. Obviously the Tracfone plan does not add on any hidden costs, something which my contract provider does. :-(
